This morning, Secretary Clinton and the president spoke again about the situation in Gaza, and they agreed that it makes sense for the secretary to travel to the region, so Secretary Clinton will depart today… Her visits will build on the engagement that we’ve undertaken in the last several days.
— Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser to President Obama. Egyptian and American officials are trying to broker a truce between Hamas and Israel. The U.S. is unwilling to talk directly to Hamas, so Egypt is taking the lead in the peace talks.
